Reverend Donald J. Bower (pastor of Hopewell from 1956 to 1982) and his wife Mrs. Joyce C. Bower both held a special interest in religious, academic, vocational, and continuing education. The purpose of the Bower Scholarship is to encourage and strengthen those who actively participate in the ministries and missions of Hopewell United Methodist Church in the development of their Christian faith, education and service by providing scholarships for college, for special vocational training, or grants to enable special Christian service. 
 
Mr. Preston Buller gave of his time and used his gifts generously in order to maintain the working order of the facility to ensure an environment of safety and worship for all who passed through its doors. The purpose of the Buller Scholarship is to encourage and strengthen those who actively participate in the ministries and missions of Hopewell United Methodist Church in the development of their technical ability, education and service by providing scholarships for college, or special vocational training. 
 
Mrs. Dorothy R. Smedley was an 81-year member of Hopewell who dedicated her entire career to nursing. The purpose of the Smedley Scholarship is to encourage and strengthen youth and other congregants of Hopewell United Methodist Church in the pursuit of their education in the nursing or other healthcare field.   
 
This scholarship application consists of this form and a brief essay. This application form enables the Scholarship Committee members to understand and appreciate the candidate’s church attendance, service, and personal involvement in Hopewell and related ministries, as well as to provide a qualitative barometer of financial need. The application essay enables the Scholarship Committee members to understand and appreciate the candidate’s faith in God and what the candidate’s future plans entail. Candidates are encouraged to be descriptive yet concise, recognizing that Scholarship Committee members may not know you personally.
